Organizing Your Home Office

Let’s face it: every usable space in life has to be organized (or reorganized) at some point, and your workspace might need it more than any of the others. You might even be looking around you right this minute and thinking that your home office is in desperate need of some help. Being timely and productive in what you do is always a little bit easier when you know where to find that oh-so-vital note you took during the conference call or to be able to gather all the receipts for the accountant when they ask for them, so the organization of your home office is an important aspect of what you do.

Let’s talk about some ways you can organize your home office.

Your Inner Packrat

If you are still shuffling office items around that you haven’t used in several years, take the plunge and throw these items out - and when it comes to records, remember this: the IRS only requires you to save records that are related to income, deduction or credit shown on your tax return until the period of limitations expires, and that’s usually seven years at the most. Some records relating to a property, stock purchase, retirement funds, or records needed for insurance or regulatory purposes may need to be retained longer; your accountant can guide you here.

Scan Documents

Don’t be afraid to scan items that you think you may need in the future. You can save documents in a service like Google Drive or Dropbox. You can also save them to a flash drive (have a backup); this step can save you room in your filing system because hard copies can be shredded.

Neat As A Pin

Your desktop is where the rubber meets the road. Keeping this area neat and tidy and clear of clutter gives you the surface you have to have to get the job done. You may need to add some drawer or filing units to your home office to help you with this organizational goal, or perhaps a desktop organization system might be just the thing.

New Storage

Shelving, storage systems, organizers, and bookshelf units can all be great additions to your home office to help you get - and stay - organized.
